The best story you’ll tell this year
Happy New Year! As January marches on, it can be quite easy to hit the gas pedal and just go.
But sometimes, going a little slower in the beginning (whether that’s the start of the project, the start of the week, or the start of your new year) can help us go faster and be more successful down the road.
So, if you want to get better at storytelling or communications, really make your mark this year, and take pride in the messages you share with the world, the first thing to do is… pause and reflect.
Here are three prompts to get you thinking:
1. What’s the best story you told last year?
For example, was there a story in your keynote address that really resonated with people?
Was there a time you got more vulnerable or “real” in conversation with someone?
Was there something you wrote about that felt particularly meaningful to you?
2. What story do you most want to tell this year?
Is there something you want to talk about that you haven’t shared yet?
Is there a subject you think should be addressed, that isn’t getting enough attention?
Is there a story you want to share but haven’t found the right place for it yet?
Here’s a hint: Get clear on what the story is, why you think it’s important, and who you think needs to hear it. Reflect on these things and it will lead you in the right direction.
3. What communications effort are you most proud of from the past year?
Telling stories can lead us to some of our proudest and most satisfying accomplishments — whether that’s having crucial conversations with family members, serving your community by sharing information that helps them grow, or completing a dream project.
Thinking about what you’re most proud of can help you savour and appreciate your efforts, AND it can help steer you in the right direction in the coming months. Because pride can be a great guide, steering you towards the things that are most satisfying and meaningful to you.
4. What story could you tell that would make you proud this year?
Considering the above, is there a story you could tell (or something you could write, say, or share) that would make you super duper proud of yourself?
Think about that. Get clear on what it is. And then get it out there. Make this your year to feel proud of yourself, and your story.
With that in mind, here are a couple things that I’m proud of which might be relevant to you:
1. I wrote a book with a client, and we wrote the whole darn thing in just three months. If you’re tired of procrastinating on your dream, and you want to get it written and make it remarkable, let me know.
2. I wrote a book proposal with another client, and with that proposal (and my guidance), he recently secured a book agent. Getting an agent is essential if you want to have your book traditionally published. And in this competitive environment, it’s a huge win.
So, if you want to write a book this year and you need help outlining it, proposing it, selling it, writing it, or making it the best freaking book you can make… call me. ;)
