Who Counts As A Storyteller
Who counts as a storyteller?
Well, you do.
Everyone does.
We are all born storytellers. It’s one of the things that makes us human. Every single person tells stories in some way, whether through language, movement, art, self-expression, or in our own thoughts and imaginations.
Whether or not you’re deliberately or actively engaged in a storytelling project right now, I can assure you that:
- Your storytelling potential is innate
- You have it in you to tell stories (and tell better stories)
- You’re telling stories in some shape or form anyway, even if you don’t realize it.
If we accept — and embrace — the idea that we’re storytellers, where does that leave us?
I think it leaves us with both an opportunity and a responsibility.
An opportunity to embrace our “storytelleryness”, to trust that our stories matter, and to tell the stories that we really care about.
And a responsibility to increase our awareness of what stories we tell, and how we tell them.
With that in mind, here are a few reflection questions to help you consider both the responsibility and opportunity in front of you:
What stories are you telling yourself? For example, about yourself, about other people, about your situation right now, about the past or future, or about the way the world works?
What stories are you telling through your words? For example, through your writing or even casual conversations?
What story are you telling by how you approach things in your life? For example, how you approach your work (or your storytelling for that matter) tells a story in itself. So does how you show up to the challenges around you.
What stories do you WANT to tell? What are the messages or ideas you want to share with the world?
Thank you for your ongoing commitment to telling stories and sharing your unique perspective with the world. Never forget how much they matter.
Never forget your stories matter!
Keep imagining, keep creating, keep speaking up, keep contributing, keep going.
You’ve got so much to share.
